When people refer to Search Engines they usually refer to the big Searchable Indexes such as Bing, Google and Yahoo where people type in search terms or keywords and the search engine returns a list of relevant sites that match the query.
These big search engines send out Crawlers or bots (Computer scanning programs) to scour the internet for new web pages and content to regularly keep their index database up to date and order to satisfy the needs of their search Engines visitors/customers.
