A challenge/response test to reduce spam from automated bots. Usually asking people to type in the characters they see in an image or solve a simple math problem displayed as an image.
Automated bots cannot see/read words in an image therefore the website owners knows that a real person has actually completed the action.
This is commonly used at the end of forms and some websites that require you to login to access them.
