Gravatar is short for Globally Recognized Avatar.
Gravatar is owned by Automattic Inc. the company behind WordPress.com and the popular Akismet anti-spam WordPress plugin.
Users can register an account on gravatar.com and then upload an avatar which they can then associate with their email address.
Then whenever a user makes comments on any sites that support Gravatar their “gr(avatar)” will be displayed along with the comment.
WordPress has embedded support for Gravatar.
