When a user agrees or opts-in to a certain action on a website. This could be agreeing to receive marketing messages from you or your business partners and most commonly joins (subscribes to) an email list or opts in to receive communication from you.
Also
Single Opt-In
When a website visitor completes an email marketing opt-in form they are automatically added to the email list.
Double Opt-in
When a website visitor completes an email marketing opt-in form they are sent an automated email asking them to click on an embedded link to confirm that they want to subscribe and be entered onto an email list. If they then click on that link they will be automatically added to the email list. If they ignore it and do not click on this link then they will not be added to the Email list.
This is done in order to prevent the email list owner from being accused of sending spam (unsolicited email) and to prevent the website visitor from receiving email communications in the event that someone else entered their email address into the opt-in form.
